18th Century Swedish Gustavian Period Original Paint Chair Signed Ephraim Stahl

About

A late 18th century chair from the Gustavian period signed by the famous Swedish chair maker, Ephraim Stahl, 1767-1820, who worked in Stockholm and was one of the main furniture makers for King Gustav III of Sweden. The pale gray paint surface is original paint. Generous seat with graceful, curved backrest inspired by ancient Roman "sulla" models. This beautiful chair has been newly upholstered in antique linen. Round, tapered, and fluted forelegs with carved lotus blossom detail and tapered saber back legs. The seat frame features egg and dart carved detail with rosettes on the corner posts. Carved herringbone design along the top of the seat rest.
