Scandinavian Modern Side Tables

SCANDINAVIAN MODERN STYLE

Scandinavian modernism is perhaps the warmest and most organic iteration of modernist design. The work of the designers associated with vintage Scandinavian modern furniture was founded on centuries-old beliefs in both quality craftsmanship and the ideal that beauty should enhance even the humblest accessories of daily life.

ORIGINS OF SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold, clean lines and simple, sturdy symmetries
  • Use of natural materials — native woods such as pine, ash and beech
  • Open, airy spaces
  • Promotion of functionality
  • Emphasis on craftsmanship; rooted in cabinetry profession and traditional construction techniques
  • Minimal ornamentation (little to no embellishment)
  • A neutral or light color palette owing to prominence of light woods

ICONIC SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGNS

VINTAGE SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The gentle, organic contours that are typical of Scandinavian design appear in the furnishings and decor created by Danish, Finnish and Swedish designers not as a stylistic gesture, but rather as a practical, ergonomic — and, as importantly, elegant — response to the human form.

Each nation produced exceptional talents in all areas of the applied arts, yet each had its forté. Sweden was home to Greta Magnusson Grossman and Bruno Mathsson — creators of the classic Grasshopper lighting series and Berlin daybed, respectively — but the country excelled most notably at ceramics. In the 1920s at the great Gustavsberg porcelain manufactory, Wilhelm Kåge introduced pieces in the Scandinavian style based on influences from folklore to Cubism; his skills were passed on to his versatile and inspired pupils Berndt Friberg and Stig Lindberg.

Likewise, Finland produced a truly ingenious Scandinavian modern furniture designer in the architect Alvar Aalto, a master at melding function and artistic form in works like the Paimio chair, created in collaboration with his first wife, Aino. Yet Finnish glassware was pre-eminent, crafted in expressive, sculptural designs by Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva.

The Danes excelled at chairs. Hans Wegner and Arne Jacobsen were exemplars of the country’s facility with wood, particularly teak

Wegner created such iconic pieces as the Round chair and the Wishbone chair; Jacobsen — while the revolutionary architect and furniture innovator produced the best-selling plywood Ant chair — designed two classic upholstered pieces of the 1950s: the Swan chair and Egg chair. The list of great Danes could go on and on, including Finn Juhl, a stylistic maverick and maker of the bold Chieftain chair; Poul Kjaerholm, with his lean metal-and-rattan aesthetic; and Verner Panton, who introduced a vibrant Pop note into international design.

Today, decades after their heyday, the prolific, ever-evolving Scandinavian modernists continue to amaze and delight, and interior designers all over the world use their pieces to bring warmth to any given space.

On 1stDibs, you will note both instantly recognizable vintage Scandinavian modern chairs, sofas, rugs and tables — those that have earned iconic status over time — and many new discoveries.

Alvar Aalto Scandinavian Modern Vintage Y Legs Dining Table Side Table c 1946
Located in Vienna, AT
Scandinavian Modern vintage square like form side table from plywood and birch dining table or side table by Alvar Aalto designed circa 1946 Finland manufactured circa 1960. A wonderful squared dining table or side table from birch while the Y leg construction shows plywood. We decided to polish the table by hand with shellac for a stunning warmth and depth look and feel. Alvar Aalto ( 1898 - 1976 ) Finnish architect and designer He worked in the circle of Le Corbusier, Fernand Leger, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Walter Gropius. Just name but a few. He was influenced from Deutschen Werkbund and Bauhaus and sought for organic architecture - nature landscape and buildings should be close together. A wonderful spirit, which reflects the current vision and the spirit of the time. Y legs stands for the leg construction and based on the bending wood by Alvar Aalto - the L legs. In the Y-legs, two slim L legs were chamfered on opposite sides and glued together. The condition is very good ready for immediate use. Throughout the size and the height the table is versatile, using as side table, as dining table for smaller sized rooms, for workspaces, offices, vary it with pieces from bold yellow and cool blue Contemporary, precious hot pink and red Rococo...

Set Little Petra Lounge Chair, Lato Side Table, Caret Table Lamp & Amore Mirror
Located in Dubai, AE
The Holiday Set - Little Petra Lounge Chair Initially introduced back in 1938, Little Petra won instant praise at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers Guild Exhibition, subsequently winning awards at exhibits in New York and Berlin. It’s one of just a few designs by architect Viggo Boesen, who became associated with Denmark’s signature design aesthetic in the 1930s called funkis style. Little Petra is surprisingly petite, able to fit into all kinds of spaces, interiors and environments. Low to the ground, open and embracing, it embodies the essence of a lounge chair, allowing for all kinds of seating positions in any cozy setting imaginable. Hallingdal 130/Oiled Walnut - Lato LN8 Side Table At first glance, Lato resembles a sculpture, with its slim, oval or round table top balanced by an oval-shaped base. Striking, graphic and poetic, its purity of form is proof that simple is sophisticated. With Lato, Nichetto wanted to keep the simplicity and streamline into a timeless side table in a style that could easily be the center of attention. Lacquered Walnut/Emperador marble - Caret Table Lamp A practical solution to the increasingly blurred boundaries between work and home, the portable Caret reimagines the linear silhouettes of the Classic, green-shaded designs – known as 'bankers lamps' – found in historic libraries. Made entirely from lacquered steel, the design features a rounded base and a long, pyramid-shaped top that emits a soft, diffused light. - Amore Mirror...
