Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Johannes Kip' after 'A. Churchill'. Johannes Kip (b Amsterdam, 1653; d London, 1722). Dutch draughtsman, engraver and dealer, active in England. He was a pupil of Bastiaen Stopendaal (1636–1707) from 1668 to 1670. His earliest dated engravings are of 1672 (e.g. the Siege of Groningen , Hollstein, no. 4), and he supplied numerous plates for books published from that date onwards. His work brought him into contact with the court of William of Orange and in 1686 he produced six plates depicting William of Orange, his Wife and Attendants near The Hague (Hollstein, no. 5). Shortly after the Glorious Revolution of 1688 Kip followed the court to England. After settling in Westminster, he worked extensively for London publishers, engraving works after Francis Barlow, Caius Gabriel Cibber (e.g. Interior of the Danish Church in London , 1697; Hollstein, no. 6) and other London-based artists. The Siege of Barcelona (Catalan: Setge de Barcelona) was a battle at the end of the War of Spanish Succession, which pitted Archduke Charles of Austria (backed by Great Britain and the Netherlands, i.e. the Grand Alliance) against Philip V of Spain, backed by France in a contest for the Spanish crown.
The surrender of the pro-Archduke forces to the Franco-Spanish army in 1714 was not only the end of the war, but also a phase in the centralization of various monarchies on the European continent which had been going on for two centuries. With the War of the Spanish Succession completed, Spain evolved from a personal union of different states to a centralized kingdom. The defenders of the city were buried in a cemetery, now a plaça (Catalan: square) called Fossar de les Moreres, where Catalans gather every 11 September, known as the National Day of Catalonia or la Diada. The former market hall Mercat del Born covers archaeological ruins which were part of the La Ribera district of Barcelona that was demolished after the defeat of Catalonia in 1714. The alleged abandonment of the Catalans defenders of Barcelona was one of the criticisms made by his opponents during the British Parliament...

The map is based primarily on Dutch sources, particularly the outlines of Siberia and the East Indies. However, the most striking feature, which is original to De Fer, is a continuous landbridge extending from northern Korea and eastern Siberia across to America. A note acknowledges Portuguese sources for this new portrayal of the region. Hokkaido (Ieso) appears as a small circular island north of Japan. The northern coastline of Asia is based on Witsen's explorations including Cap Tabin and Cap Glace. The interior is filled with details, including what appears to be a road from Moscow to Peking, and the Great Wall of China. The Caspian Sea is presented in an unusual shape. The coastline of a portion of New Guinea is incorrectly named as Nouvelle Zeelande. Graced with three beautifully designed cartouches.

Johann Matthias Haas' revision of J.B. Homann's 1715 map of Africa, augmented to include important cartographic developments as recorded by Guillaume Delisle and D'Anville. The map presents a fairly accurate picture without most of the fictitious lakes and rivers of previous cartography, focusing on the known coastal regions of the continent, leaving the interior blank or marked Terra Incognito. Egypt, Nubia and Abyssinia are shown as distinct entities, Lake Nyasa is shown as Lac Marawi, and the Congo is located. The Dutch settlements of Castell Batov and Stellenbosch are shown at the Cape. The most striking feature of the map is the large title cartouche that is framed by elephant tusks and a horned serpent.
