A winged lounge chair with a low-profile design from our Hayworth Collection. Benchmade in Los Angeles, its soft curves pair with a sturdy foundation of outdoor wood in this indoor-outdoor piece created to embrace the spirit of endless summer.
Designed with functionality in mind, the upholstered back cushion and removable seat cushion are both made of outdoor dry-fast foam. The base and legs are made of solid Iroko with a frame that includes slats for drainage when used in an outdoor or poolside environment.
All our outdoor upholstered pieces come standard with an ivory outdoor textile (not pictured here). They are also available as C.O.M. (Customer’s Own Materials).

About this piece:
+ Fabric available as Ivory Outdoor Textile or COM (customer's own materials)
+ Fade & mildew resistant fabric is recommended for outdoor usage or in high-humidity environments.
+ Please inquire about yardage requirements for patterned fabrics.
+ COM Lead Time begins when fabric arrives, SFA approved (for custom finishes) and DFA approved (for custom sizing and designs).
+ Covered or protected storage is advised. Avoid exposure to extreme temperatures which may damage frame. Wood will naturally grey, fade or patina over time; exposure to the elements will expedite this inherent trait.

In the Autumn of 1945, Finn Juhl presented the 45 Chair at the annual Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition. Today, the chair is widely regarded as one of the most revolutionizing and iconic pieces within Danish furniture design. Finn Juhl dreamt of studying art history and his deep understanding of international contemporary art is abundantly clear in the bold 45 Chair. With its curved backrest and organic shape this chair cemented Finn Juhl as one of the leading designers of the 20th century.
In a review on Finn Juhl's Stand at the exhibition in 1945, the architect Erik Herløw wrote; “Most interesting about the exhibition is probably Finn Juhl's work. After many years of experiments, we now see a clarified result. Finn Juhl does not design on a refinement of traditions but has instead logically solved functions and therefrom shaped furniture on his terms. In the early years, Finn Juhl’s attempts seemed exaggerated, but now it is so much more interesting to observe the result he has achieved by going his own ways. Most beautiful is an armchair, where the frame is organically shaped as a bone, able to support the muscles of an arm and the weight of a body. The expression of the chair is reminiscent of a weapon, sharpened by human hands.”
The 45 Chair is a true masterpiece and has become an icon of Finn Juhl’s universe of furniture. With this chair, Finn Juhl managed to create an, at the time, unseen design by separating the carried and the carrying elements. In reality, Finn Juhl had previously experimented with separating the upholstered parts from the wooden parts within his furniture, but with the sleek, strong and elegant 45 Chair this unique design characteristic manifested.
On the 45 Chair the space between the frame and the seat creates a lightness, which combined with its organic shape and sublime detailing, ensures unique beauty and floating elegance. A company that has always attributed such great importance to the author of the designs could never forget the great figures in history. That is why the BD catalogue of contemporary creations has always included those by admired classical masters. Antoni Gaudí (1852/1926) is, without doubt, the most internationally well-known Spanish architect. But is not only his buildings and brilliant architectural solutions that have travelled the globe. His integrated conception of architecture led him to pay attention, not only to structural calculations, but also to all the decorative elements, including furniture, that would form part of the building. The admiration felt by modern designers for the furniture designed by Gaudí has not gone unnoticed by BD which was the first company to rescue them from history by embarking on their serial production using traditional art and craft techniques and the same materials –varnished solid oak– in order to reproduce all the rich detail displayed by the originals when they were first produced.

“The chair is the piece of furniture that is closest to human beings,” said Hans Wegner. The revered Danish cabinetmaker and furniture designer was prolific, having designed nearly 500 chairs over the course of his lifetime. His beloved designs include the Wishbone chair, the wingback Papa Bear chair and many more.
Other designers of Scandinavian modernist chairs introduced new dynamics to this staple with sculptural flowing lines, curvaceous shapes and efficient functionality. The Paimio armchair, Swan chair and Panton chair are vintage works of Finnish and Danish seating that left an indelible mark on the history of good furniture design.
“What works good is better than what looks good, because what works good lasts,” said Ray Eames.
Visionary polymaths Ray and Charles Eames experimented with bent plywood and fiberglass with the goal of producing affordable furniture for a mass market. Like other celebrated mid-century modern furniture designers of elegant low-profile furnishings — among them Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Finn Juhl — the Eameses considered ergonomic support, durability and cost, all of which should be top of mind when shopping for the perfect chair. The mid-century years yielded many popular chairs.
The Eameses introduced numerous icons for manufacturer Herman Miller, such as the Eames lounge chair and ottoman, molded plywood dining chairs the DCM and DCW (which can be artfully mismatched around your dining table) and a wealth of other treasured pieces for the home and office.
