Scandinavian Modern Lounge Chairs

SCANDINAVIAN MODERN STYLE

Scandinavian modernism is perhaps the warmest and most organic iteration of modernist design. The work of the designers associated with vintage Scandinavian modern furniture was founded on centuries-old beliefs in both quality craftsmanship and the ideal that beauty should enhance even the humblest accessories of daily life.

ORIGINS OF SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

CHARACTERISTICS OF SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE DESIGN

  • Bold, clean lines and simple, sturdy symmetries
  • Use of natural materials — native woods such as pine, ash and beech
  • Open, airy spaces
  • Promotion of functionality
  • Emphasis on craftsmanship; rooted in cabinetry profession and traditional construction techniques
  • Minimal ornamentation (little to no embellishment)
  • A neutral or light color palette owing to prominence of light woods

VINTAGE SCANDINAVIAN MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The gentle, organic contours that are typical of Scandinavian design appear in the furnishings and decor created by Danish, Finnish and Swedish designers not as a stylistic gesture, but rather as a practical, ergonomic — and, as importantly, elegant — response to the human form.

Each nation produced exceptional talents in all areas of the applied arts, yet each had its forté. Sweden was home to Greta Magnusson Grossman and Bruno Mathsson — creators of the classic Grasshopper lighting series and Berlin daybed, respectively — but the country excelled most notably at ceramics. In the 1920s at the great Gustavsberg porcelain manufactory, Wilhelm Kåge introduced pieces in the Scandinavian style based on influences from folklore to Cubism; his skills were passed on to his versatile and inspired pupils Berndt Friberg and Stig Lindberg.

Likewise, Finland produced a truly ingenious Scandinavian modern furniture designer in the architect Alvar Aalto, a master at melding function and artistic form in works like the Paimio chair, created in collaboration with his first wife, Aino. Yet Finnish glassware was pre-eminent, crafted in expressive, sculptural designs by Tapio Wirkkala and Timo Sarpaneva.

The Danes excelled at chairs. Hans Wegner and Arne Jacobsen were exemplars of the country’s facility with wood, particularly teak

Wegner created such iconic pieces as the Round chair and the Wishbone chair; Jacobsen — while the revolutionary architect and furniture innovator produced the best-selling plywood Ant chair — designed two classic upholstered pieces of the 1950s: the Swan chair and Egg chair. The list of great Danes could go on and on, including Finn Juhl, a stylistic maverick and maker of the bold Chieftain chair; Poul Kjaerholm, with his lean metal-and-rattan aesthetic; and Verner Panton, who introduced a vibrant Pop note into international design.

Today, decades after their heyday, the prolific, ever-evolving Scandinavian modernists continue to amaze and delight, and interior designers all over the world use their pieces to bring warmth to any given space.

On 1stDibs, you will note both instantly recognizable vintage Scandinavian modern chairs, sofas, rugs and tables — those that have earned iconic status over time — and many new discoveries.

“Clam Chair“ by Arnold Madsen 1944 Madsen & Schubell Sheepskin Denmark
Located in Berlin, BE
This “Clam” chair has a beloved design thanks to which it is considered by some as one of the most attractive chairs of “Nordic Design”. The model has a rather perplexing history, and has been attributed to several designers before, the latest being the Danish architect Phillip Arctander. However, recent research revealed that the “Clam” is the model that in fact started the story of Madsen & Schubell. Arnold Madsen designed the chair in 1944 in his small basement workshop in Gothersgade, Copenhagen. This chair has a characteristic organic shape with soft curves, perched on club-shaped beech legs. The name comes from the shape of the seat and back that together form the silhouette of an open clam. The round armrests compliment the overall round feel of the chair. The seat is slightly raised towards the front, while the back is tilted back to provide great sitting comfort. The seat and back are covered in cream-white sheepskin, adding to the soft and cosy feel of this “Clam”. In 1944, the chair was already exhibited in conjunction with the presentation of the newly opened furniture store NY FORM A/S in Copenhagen, which sold leading design of the day. In 1953, Madsen & Schubell sold the licence for the chair to the Norwegian company Vik and Blindheim.

Swedish Modern Lounge Chair with Footstool, Sweden 1940s
Located in Utrecht, NL
Before the war, “Swedish Modern” was a word which had a clear-cut definition in design terms. It was style-forming and came about through the determined aesthetic to raise the standard of the Swedish home and to improve the taste for a better quality of design. It is an inheritance coming from a rich tradition of beauty loving people who were courageous enough to break away from the swaddling clothes of the past to entertain new forms for living. In general, qualities of Swedish modern furniture include simple clean lines without excess decoration, made with mostly light-coloured woods, in this case, birch. This set has an understated, elegant look that is harmonious and well-balanced. The peculiar looking lounge chair has an elongated silhouette, with gentle, rounded edges and warmth expressed through the design. The long seat together with the footstool assures an exceptional lounging experience. The arms curve outwards, and the back has button tufting which are the main purely decorative elements of the design. Besides the seat, the bent back legs are the main distinguishing elements, serving a functional role. The thread running through Scandinavian design is functionalism, which is the most evident in the sturdy frame and the footstool, which further elongates the chair’s seat visually. At the same time, the half circle shape also serves a purely aesthetic role, enhanced by the buttons that also tie it together with the chair. The tapered birch legs assure stability and along with the bouclé upholstery, add to the overall modern, elegant look. Moving into the machine age, life became somewhat easier, and functionalism evolved into also meeting the emotional needs of people. This gave Swedish functionalism a more natural and humanistic side, which is evident when looking at this set. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chair and stool have been reupholstered recently in a premium bouclé fabric. Each of our items can be re-upholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Dimensions: Lounge Chair 27.95 in W x 38.58 in D x 36.81 in H; Seat height 17.71 in; Arm height 23.62 in 71 cm W x 98 cm D x 93.5 cm H; Seat height 45 cm; Arm height 60 cm.
