Judy Ledgerwood Art

American, b. 1959
Judy Ledgerwood is a contemporary painter based in Chicago, USA. Since the 1980’s she has been exploring light, color, and space in paintings that combine the formal vocabulary of concrete abstraction with influences from pop culture to create vividly colored compositions. She combines decorative patterning, elements of textile design and other traditionally female crafts, with bold color and assertive brush strokes, traits associated with the historically male-dominated tradition of gestural abstraction. Often using stereotypically “feminine” elements, such as pastel colors and stylized floral patterns, Ledgerwood merges formalist and feminist concerns in works that are both sensual and subversive, with the ability to resonate beyond their initial impact. Ledgerwood’s work has been exhibited widely. She has completed several prominent commissions, including paintings for the American Embassies in San Salvador, El Salvador and Vientiane, Laos; a large stained glass installation for the Bir Hakeim Paris Metro RATP Station, Paris, France; and site specific installations for the Art Institute of Chicago and Bloomberg in NYC. Her work is included in numerous public collections, including: The Art Institute of Chicago, IL The Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Evanston, IL Chicago Public Library, Chicago, IL Los Angeles Museum of Modern Art Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL Milwaukee Museum of Art, Milwaukee, WI Oak Park Public Library, Chicago, IL Swiss Bank Collection, New York, NY University of Chicago Booth School of Business, Chicago, IL

Old Glory
By Judy Ledgerwood
Located in Bloomington, IL
"Old Glory" is a unique monotype from a series of prints by Judy Ledgerwood published by Manneken Press in 2020. Rather than using ink, the artist painted directly on a sanded acrylic plate with watercolor paints. The impervious surface of the plate allowed the paint to flow, pool, settle and dry in ways that are distinct from painting in an unmediated manner on paper. When dry, the plate was printed onto damp Hahnemühle Copperplate paper; the moisture in the paper reactivated the watercolor paint and the pressure exerted by the press transferred the image, resulting in a one-of-a-kind monotype print. In "Old Glory" Ledgerwood alludes to the American flag in its rectangular format and red, white and blue color scheme. The artist's signature, title and date are verso, in pencil, and the Manneken Press blindstamp is impressed into the lower left corner of the print. Since the 1980’s Judy Ledgerwood has been exploring light, color, and space in paintings that combine the formal vocabulary of concrete abstraction with influences from pop culture to create vividly colored compositions. Judy Ledgerwood has received awards from The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts; and Illinois Art Council. Ledgerwood has also received an Artadia Award and a Tiffany Award...

Abstract Expressionist Watercolor Painting Woodblock Political Poster Mel King
By Katherine Porter
Located in Surfside, FL
This is original watercolor over a limited edition woodcut political poster. hand signed, dated and numbered. it bears similarity to works by Alexander Calder. Employing a star and abstract design. Katherine Porter is an American artist born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1941. She received her BA from Colorado College in 1963. Katherine Porter received an honorary doctorate from Colby College. She has shown twice in the Whitney Biennial and solo exhibitions at the Knoedler Gallery in London, the Nina Nielsen Gallery in Boston, and the Andre Emmerich and Salander-O'Reilly Galleries in New York. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Tel Aviv Museum and Bezalel Museum in Jerusalem. (Katherine Page Porter, Katherine Pavlis Porter) Her exhibitions include biennials in 1976 and 1981 at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; 1980 at the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts; 1981, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire; 1985, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts; and 1987 at the Sidney Janis Gallery, New York City. Classic Americana. American Abstract Expressionism. Early Pattern and Decoration piece, The movement was championed by the gallery owner Holly Solomon. The P&D movement wanted to revive an interest in minor forms such as patterning which at that point was equated with triviality. The prevailing negative view of decoration was one not generally shared by non-Western cultures, The Pattern and Decoration movement was influenced by sources outside of what was considered to be fine art. Blurring the line between art and design, many P&D works mimic patterns like those on wallpapers, printed fabrics, and quilts. There is a close connection between the Pattern and Decoration movement and the Feminist art movement. The P&D movement arose in opposition to the Minimalist and Conceptualist movements. Mary Grigoriadis Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Miriam Schapiro, Robert Zakanitch all worked in this same vein. Joan Miró Derriere Le Miroir c.1967 (lithographic cover)
By Joan Miró
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Joan Miró lithographic cover: Derrière le miroir: Lithographic cover; 15 x 11 inches. Very good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Portfolio: Derrière le miroir, c.1968. Looks superb matted & framed. Derrière le miroir: In October 1945 the French art dealer Aimé Maeght opens his art gallery at 13 Rue de Téhéran in Paris. His beginning coincides with the end of Second World War and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France. The publication was created in October 1946 (n°1) and published without interruption until 1982 (n°253). Its original articles and illustrations (mainly original color lithographs by the gallery artists) who were famous at the time. The lithographic publication covered only the artists exhibited by Maeght gallery either through personal or group exhibitions. Among them were, Pierre Alechinsky, Francis Bacon, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Eduardo Chillida, Alberto Giacometti, Vassily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Saul Steinberg and Antoni Tapies. Widely considered one of the leading Surrealists (though he was never officially part of the group), Joan Miró was also a pioneer of automatism: a method of spontaneous drawing that attempted to express the inner workings of the human psyche. Miró used color and form in a symbolic manner, developing intricate compositions and a wandering linear style that combined abstract elements with recurring motifs such as birds, eyes, and the moon. During his lifetime, Miró received the Grand Prize for Graphic Work at the 1954 Venice Biennale, exhibited at the first Documenta exhibition in 1955, and enjoyed multiple high-profile retrospectives. Today, Miró’s work—which has sold for eight figures at auction—can be found in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Museum of Modern Art, among other institutions. His public sculptures and murals are installed in cities around the world, including Milan, Paris, and Barcelona. Related Categories: Mid Century Modern. 1960s. Joan Miro prints...
