Tony Ng Art

Malaysian, b. 1980

Tony Ng is personally interested in collecting batiks. He has chosen the textiles to be the subject of his paintings not only because of their vibrant color and patterns, but also because the art itself symbolizes the civic culture of Malaysia. Every batik is unique, and every piece represents the beauty of this culture.

Tony Ng Chit Keong was born in 1980. He graduated from Kuala Lumpur College of Arts with a diploma in fine art and also completed an art restoration course at Accademia Riaci in Italy. Today Ng is an emerging Malaysian artist who focuses on the aesthetics of batiks — he endeavors to elevate their beauty in his work and believes them to be a unique subject in contemporary art.

Ng’s art can be found in the collections of Mandarin Oriental, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) and elsewhere.

Artist: Tony Ng
Brilliant #3, Peranakan Baba Nyonya Straits Chinese Kamcheng Porcelain, In Stock
By Tony Ng
Located in Kuala Lumpur, MY
Tony lived with his grandmother when he was a child. He has seen many Peranakan tableware at her house. Although the artist is not the descendent of Peranakan, he is deeply influenced by multicultural environment in his growth background. Peranakan is not just one symbol of diverse cultures in Malaysia, but is more about an emotional connection between grandmother and him. This is a painting of a Kamcheng sitting on a batik. The edges of the painting has gold plates finishing. Kamcheng refers to the elaborately-decorated, traditional Peranakan storage vase and also means friendship, the theme for this year's Peranakan Festival. The Peranakans or Peranakan Chinese are a sub-ethnic group defined by their genealogical descent from the first waves of Chinese settlers in the Malay Peninsula and Indonesian Archipelago. In Malaysia, the Peranakan Chinese commonly refer to themselves as Baba-Nonya. The term Baba 峇峇 is an honorific for Straits Chinese...
