Lucian Freud
Pluto Aged Twelve

Buyer Protection Guaranteed

Pluto Aged Twelve is regarded as one of the finest animal portraits of the last century, and a masterpiece of modern printmaking. This is Lucian Freud's second etching of his beloved pet dog, a whippet called Pluto. The hand is reported to have been included after its presence in the composition became part of the story, David Dawson having to stroke the dog constantly to keep it still during the long hours Freud required to draw it. The hand provides symbolism however, especially if one notices the crossed fingers, and also balances the composition.

This work depicts a black and white etching by Freud of his dog lying down, relaxed on the floor with a hand outstretched to stroke or comfort it.
